Videos Worth Watching
Ok, so they may not all be directly related to social studies, but if you've got a few minutes, I think they're worth checking out.
If you've come across a video you think I should check out, send me the link. If I think it's cool, I'll put it on the page. Remember, this isn't Ridiculousness or Tosh.O, so think before you send me a link. It should be school appropriate, and cool.

Submitted by a student who said, "This one shows the power of poetry and how anyone can write it."
As a father, I can really appreciate her message in this TED Talk, and admire her skill in saying it. I think her message about creating poetry is something we could apply to many things in our lives. |

Submitted by the same student as the above. "This one I wish everyone would watch because no one understands why I like classical music, and how they can too. They have a look of disgust when they have to hear it and all they want to do, is pull out their phones to listen to country or pop. In art class, last year for instance, I suggested classical music while doing our projects, but everyone objected, so we ended up listening to country music. Such prejudice for it, I can't stand it! So, have a go and watch this bit; it's brilliant."
I wholeheartedly agree. |

As I've said about earlier videos, I really have a great deal of respect for craftsmen. Watching this video makes me want to take up blacksmithing.

In the late 1930's, Nicholas Winton helped dozens of Jewish children escape the Holocaust. He went back home and never told anyone. In the 1980's, his wife discovered papers describing what he had done. She went to the BBC with them, and they arranged for him to be in the audience for this show. He had no idea that he was going to be featured, or what was about to happen.

A reminder that life should be lived, not experienced through the screen of your phone.

Rick Mereki: "3 guys, 44 days, 11 countries, 18 flights, 38 thousand miles, an exploding volcano, 2 cameras and almost a terabyte of footage = a trip of a lifetime."

Pianist Maria Joao Pires was asked to play with an orchestra in Amsterdam and was apparently given the wrong program ahead of time. She showed up expecting to play one Mozart concerto, and is visibly shocked when the orchestra starts playing and it's a completely different one...that she doesn't have the music for. What happens next is a good example of talent and professionalism, on both her part and the conductor's. As a s side note, I've seen her in concert, and she's amazing.

Sean Stiegemeier: "So
I saw all of these pictures of that volcano in Iceland nobody can pronounce the
name of, so I figured I should go and do something that is not news footage but
something more cinematic. But the flights to get over took forever as expected
(somewhat). 4 days after leaving I finally made it, but the weather was
terrible for another 4. Just before leaving it got pretty good for about a day
and a half and this is what I managed to get."

An excellent take on the pure joy of language as well as its "proper" use.

An easy to understand overview of Stephen Hawking's major theories. It gives you a good idea of why he's become so famous in under 3 minutes.

Keith Loutit: "This
film is 100% 'real', but there are some new techniques for me here, such as
using time lapse to create the illusion of forward movement for the helicopter
ocean scenes. These flight sequences would not be possible without the skill
and patience of Chief Pilot Peter Yates. Thanks also to Trevor Cracknell (for
getting wet!) and Family."
The video is made from still photographs that have been tilt shifted to create the feel of models. |

There are several good things that can be taken away from this video. Meet Jack English, a 93 year old man who lives life on his terms.

I'm always very impressed by people who dedicate themselves to trying to perfect one thing. This man has spent his life trying to rediscover the techniques of master sword makers in Japan that have been lost for more than 600 years.

I've been telling my students for years to think of the Declaration of Independence as a break-up letter. Someone else agreed, obviously, and borrowed some music to make the point.
